A continuous sedimentation tank is a settling unit used to separate suspended solids from water while the system operates continuously. Unlike batch settling, where water is filled, settled and discharged in separate steps, a continuous tank allows wastewater to enter and clarified water to leave at the same time. This makes it suitable for wastewater treatment plants and industrial systems that require stable, long-term operation.

The working principle is gravity separation. Wastewater enters the tank through an inlet distribution structure that reduces turbulence and spreads flow evenly. When the water moves slowly through the settling zone, heavier particles, flocs or precipitates settle to the bottom. Clarified water flows out through an overflow weir or outlet channel, while the settled sludge is collected in a hopper or bottom area and discharged through a sludge pipe, pump or scraper system.
