Industrial CPI Filter for Efficient Oil-Water Separation in Wastewater Pretreatment

An industrial CPI filter is designed to remove free oil, floating oil, grease and part of suspended solids from oily wastewater by using corrugated plate interceptor technology. It is commonly used as a pretreatment unit before DAF, filtration, biological treatment, membrane systems or final discharge treatment in petrochemical, machinery processing, vehicle washing, steel, power plant, shipyard, food processing and manufacturing wastewater projects. Qingdao Jinwantong Environmental Science And Technology Co., Ltd., founded in 2006 in Shandong, China, manufactures CPI oil-water separators, lamella clarifiers, sedimentation tanks, DAF dissolved air flotation machines, automatic dosing systems, sludge dewatering machines, MBR/MBBR systems and packaged sewage treatment plants. We provide customized CPI systems according to flow rate, oil content, TSS, pH, temperature, material requirements, site layout and treatment goals.

An industrial CPI filter is a compact oil-water separation device used for pretreating oily industrial wastewater. CPI stands for Corrugated Plate Interceptor. Although it is often called a “filter,” its main function is not fine filtration, but gravity-based separation of free oil, floating oil, grease and part of settleable solids.

Industrial wastewater may come from petrochemical plants, machinery workshops, vehicle washing stations, steel mills, power plants, shipyards, food processing factories and other manufacturing facilities. These effluents often contain lubricating oil, cutting oil, floating grease, suspended solids and process residues. If free oil is not removed at the pretreatment stage, it may reduce DAF efficiency, block filters, foul membranes, affect biological treatment and increase maintenance costs.

The working principle of a CPI oil-water separator is based on density difference, laminar flow and coalescence. Wastewater enters the inlet distribution chamber, where flow is slowed and evenly distributed. It then passes through a series of inclined corrugated plates. Since oil is lighter than water, free oil droplets rise along the plate surface. The corrugated plate structure shortens the rising distance and helps smaller droplets merge into larger oil droplets. These larger droplets float to the oil collection zone and are discharged through an oil outlet or skimming device. Heavier solids settle into the sludge hopper and are removed through the sludge discharge system.

A typical treatment process is:

Industrial Oily Wastewater → Inlet Distribution → CPI Plate Separation → Oil Collection → Sludge Discharge → Further Treatment

A complete industrial CPI filter system may include an inlet chamber, flow distribution device, corrugated plate pack, separation tank, oil collection area, oil skimmer or oil discharge pipe, sludge hopper, sludge discharge valve, outlet chamber, inspection cover, pipelines, valves and optional control components. According to wastewater composition and site conditions, the equipment can be manufactured from carbon steel with anti-corrosion coating, stainless steel, FRP or other suitable materials.

For correct selection, buyers should provide average flow rate, peak flow, oil concentration, oil droplet size if available, TSS, pH range, wastewater temperature, viscosity, corrosiveness, required outlet oil content, installation space and downstream process. These parameters affect retention time, plate configuration, tank volume, material choice and sludge discharge design.

It is important to understand the application boundary. CPI filters are effective for free oil and separable oil droplets, but they cannot directly remove stable emulsified oil, dissolved organics or soluble chemicals. If wastewater contains surfactants, emulsified oil or complex pollutants, the CPI system may need to work with demulsification, coagulation, DAF, filtration, biological treatment or membrane treatment.

Qingdao Jinwantong provides customized industrial CPI filters and supporting wastewater treatment equipment. Buyers can send wastewater data, flow rate, oil content, TSS, pH, site layout and treatment target for model selection and quotation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an industrial CPI filter used for?

An industrial CPI filter is used to remove free oil, floating oil, grease and part of suspended solids from oily industrial wastewater before downstream treatment.
CPI equipment mainly removes free oil and separable oil droplets. Stable emulsified oil usually requires demulsification, coagulation, DAF or other supporting processes.
Selection depends on flow rate, oil concentration, oil droplet size, TSS, pH, temperature, viscosity, outlet requirement, footprint and downstream process.
Yes. Tank size, material, corrugated plate configuration, oil collection method, sludge discharge, coating and inlet/outlet layout can be customized.
Please provide flow rate, peak flow, oil content, TSS, pH, temperature, wastewater source, treatment target, material preference, site layout and project location.

Reduce Oil Load Before Sensitive Treatment Units

Reduce Oil Load Before Sensitive Treatment Units

Free oil is one of the common causes of unstable industrial wastewater treatment. If oil enters downstream units directly, it may reduce dissolved air flotation efficiency, coat filter media, foul membranes, block pipelines and affect biological activity. An industrial CPI filter removes separable oil at the front stage through corrugated plate gravity separation, helping lower the oil load before more sensitive equipment. Qingdao Jinwantong can configure CPI systems according to flow rate, oil concentration, suspended solids, temperature and treatment target, helping B2B buyers improve pretreatment reliability and reduce oil-related maintenance risks.
Designed for Practical Oil and Sludge Management

Designed for Practical Oil and Sludge Management

A CPI filter must handle both floating oil and settled sludge. Poor oil collection may cause separated oil to return to the outlet water, while poor sludge discharge may block the corrugated plate channels and reduce separation efficiency. Qingdao Jinwantong considers oil outlet structure, sludge hopper design, discharge valves, inspection covers, cleaning access and pipeline layout during equipment configuration. This practical design approach helps contractors and plant owners reduce maintenance difficulty, keep stable separation performance and avoid frequent shutdowns caused by oil or sludge accumulation.
Flexible Integration With Complete Wastewater Lines

Flexible Integration With Complete Wastewater Lines

In many industrial projects, a CPI filter is only the first step of the complete treatment process. Depending on water quality, the system may need to work with DAF, chemical dosing, lamella clarification, filtration, biological treatment, membrane treatment or sludge dewatering. Qingdao Jinwantong supplies CPI oil-water separators together with DAF machines, automatic dosing systems, lamella clarifiers, sludge dewatering machines, MBR/MBBR systems and packaged sewage treatment plants. This helps B2B buyers simplify procurement, reduce supplier coordination and improve process compatibility.
