A cheap clarifier tank is a budget-friendly wastewater treatment unit designed for solid-liquid separation. It removes suspended solids, chemical flocs, biological sludge and settleable particles from water by using gravity. In many treatment systems, a clarifier is installed after coagulation-flocculation, biological treatment, DAF, or other pretreatment units to reduce turbidity and improve final water quality.
The working principle is simple. Wastewater enters the tank through an inlet distribution structure, which helps reduce flow disturbance. As the water moves slowly through the clarifier, heavier particles settle to the bottom, while clarified water flows toward the outlet weir. The settled sludge is collected in a hopper or sludge zone and discharged periodically or continuously. In some compact designs, inclined plates or lamella modules are added to increase settling area and improve separation efficiency within a smaller footprint.

Clarifier tanks can be made from carbon steel with anti-corrosion coating, stainless steel, FRP or concrete, depending on budget, wastewater characteristics and project site conditions. For compact treatment plants, lamella clarifiers are often preferred because inclined plate packs provide more effective settling area in a smaller tank volume.
In a complete wastewater treatment line, a clarifier can work with chemical dosing systems to improve floc formation, with DAF systems for oil and fine suspended solids removal, or with MBR/MBBR biological systems for sludge separation and effluent polishing. It can also be combined with sludge dewatering equipment for easier sludge handling.
However, a clarifier tank has limitations. It is mainly used for settleable solids and flocs. It cannot independently remove dissolved pollutants such as soluble COD, ammonia nitrogen, salinity or toxic chemicals. If wastewater contains emulsified oil, very fine colloids or high organic load, additional treatment such as coagulation, DAF, biological treatment or filtration may be required.
